Ajay Bhatnagar is a 1989 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Jharkhand cadre. On 28 June 2023, he was appointed as the Special Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) until 20 November 2024, the date of his retirement.
Ajay Bhatnagar, a senior IPS officer, has held significant roles with the Jharkhand Police. He has served as ADG (Headquarters), ADG of CID, and DIG of Special Branch in Police Headquarters in Jharkhand. Additionally, he served as Hazaribagh’s SP. Ajay Bhatnagar has worked for the CRPF, NPA, and the CISF.
On 24 January 2018, he was appointed as the Joint Director of CBI. In January 2020, Ajay Bhatnagar was promoted to the position of Additional Director of the agency.

In January 2010, Vandana, the wife of Ajay Bhatnagar, went to the police to report a case of pickpocketing. According to the police, Vandana was targeted by pickpockets while she and her husband were shopping at Select City Mall in Saket, South Delhi.
