Some Lesser Known Facts About Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary
Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary is a three-star General in the Pakistan Army. He has been serving as the 22nd Director General of ISPR since 6 December 2022.
He belongs to the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) corps and was the first person to be appointed as the DG of Pakistan’s ISPR.
He was born and raised in a middle-class family in the Thal desert area of Punjab, Pakistan. In an interview, he mentioned that as the Thal desert is a dry and tough region, he and his family faced many challenges.
He was an average student in his academics and passed his matriculation in the second division. But he worked hard and got admission in the Pakistan Military Academy, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
In an interview, he mentioned that during his training, his fellow cadets called him “Camel of the Desert”, as he was physically very strong and never complained about the tough training of military.
In 2001, Ahmed’s father, Sultan Bashir Mahmood, was arrested for his alleged links with Osama bin Laden and the Taliban. Bashir Mahmood was also black listed by the UN Security Council’s al-Qaida Sanctions Committee for providing nuclear technology to Osama bin Laden .
It was Sultan Bashir Mahmood who brought Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan to Pakistan from Holland. Abdul Qadeer was known as the father of Pakistan’s nuclear programme.
Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary’s father was compelled to retire early by the Pakistani government. Following his retirement, he co-founded Ummah Tameer e-Nau (UTN), a non-profit organisation that provided information about chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons to Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.
Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary joined the Pakistan Army in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) corps.
Ahmed Chaudhary’s dedication to the Pakistan Army allowed him to attend a military college in Germany, where he performed well and also ranked first among all the international officers who participated in the course.
In 2020, he was appointed as Director General of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.
In 2022, he became the 22nd Director General of ISPR, which is a media and communications wing of Pakistan.
As he was the first person from the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) corps to hold this post, which is usually given to officers from fighting units, he faced criticism for this.
In May 2024, Ahmed Sharid held a major press conference, in which he strongly condemned the violent event, where a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporter attacked military buildings, including the GHQ (Army Headquarters) and the Corps Commander’s House in Lahor,e after the arrest of former cricketer and politician Imran Khan . He added that what happened on that day was a planned conspiracy, and it was also a Black Day for the Pakistan military.
In May 2025, during Operation Sindoor, he led numerous press conferences and addressed the people of Pakistan on behalf of the military. He provided updates on the war situation, highlighted civilian casualties, and presented Pakistan’s perspective to the public.
