Convicted for kidnapping and murder by the court of law
On 29 April 2023, Afzal and his younger brother Mukhtar Ansari
were found guilty by a local court in Uttar Pradesh in two cases, i.e., the abduction of a VHP worker named Nandkishore Rungta in 1996 and the killing of a BJP MLA named Krishnanand Rai in 2005. The court, in its judgement, gave a four-year prison sentence to Afzal, while his brother was given a ten-year prison sentence. The duo was also asked by the court to deposit Rs. 1 lac and Rs. 5 lacs respectively in the court as a fine. Krishnanand Rai was murdered by assailants, hired by the brothers. According to sources, Rai was attending a family function in his native village when he was asked to inaugurate a local cricket match on 29 November 2005. The sources also revealed that Rai was convinced to travel for the inauguration without his security and the government-allotted bulletproof car. While he was on his way back, the assailants ambushed him and shot him multiple times from close range with automatic weapons. check sources
