Abhishek Nayar belongs to a Malyali family in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
During childhood, Abhishek Nayar aspired to become a football player as he enjoyed the sport; however, his father convinced him to pursue cricket instead as football had no future.
Abhishek Nayar began practising and playing cricket at Shivaji Park, Mumbai and was mentored by many renowned Indian cricketers including Chandrakant Pandit, Pravin Ambre, and Dinesh Nanavati.
He began his career playing for Mumbai in various Under-16 and Under-19 leagues. Later, he was chosen for the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy.
In 2006, Abhishek Nayar played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and gained much fame as a cricketer during the tournament.
In 2007, Abhishek Nayar scored 152 against the Karachi Urbans during the Mohammad Nissar Trophy.
During the 2012/13 Ranji Trophy, he became the second-highest run-scorer. He scored more than 966 runs including three centuries and eight 50s and picked 19 wickets in total.
In 2009, during his debut ODI match against West Indies, Abhishek he played in one innings where did not score a single run in the seven balls he was faced with. While bowling, he played three overs and gave away 17 runs without picking up any wickets.
In February 2013, he was not part of India A or Board President’s XI (India); however, he was selected to play in the second match during a practice tour against Australia in Chennai.
In 2013, Abhishek equalled the record of the Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami in an ODI when he sent down 10 wides and a no-ball in a 17-ball over in the semi-final of the inter-zone Deodhar Trophy. Nayar was unhappy and later said, “It was more disappointment than dissent.”

‘s first ball. He started throwing wides after the ball of the over.
In 2013, during the Challenger Trophy, he played for the India Blues and scored an unbeaten 75 off 39 balls against India Red.
During the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy Tournament, he was dropped by Mumbai and later played four matches with the Puducherry team.
In 2018, he shifted from Mumbai to Puducherry team for the Ranji Trophy tournament.
In November 2018, he played in his 100th match.

In an interview, Nayar said that the best and the proudest moment for him during his career was when he won his first Ranji Trophy tournament.
In July 2018, he was appointed as an assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders and has been appointed the head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders, the franchise cricket team of the Caribbean Premier League.

In 2019, at the age of 36, he retired from his cricket career. In an interview, he talked about retiring and said,
I have been thinking about this for a while. When you have no more opportunities of playing at the highest level, it is better that I make way for a young cricketer. There is no point in staying back and I want to focus on coaching assignments now”
Abhishek Nayar has also played for SoBo Supersonics at the T20 Mumbai Tournament.
He is often credited with the success of the Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik’s
success in the Indian Premier League. In an interview, Dinesh Karthik’s father said,
It was Nayar who inspired Karthik to aim for the role of a specialist batsman at the death, and now he is excelling in that.”
Abhishek Nayar is a dog lover and has a pet dog.
