Some Lesser Known Facts About Aarti Holla-Maini
Aarti Holla-Maini is an Indian-origin British satellite industry expert who was appointed Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) on 26 June 2023.
In September 1993, she started her career as a Trainee Solicitor at Pritchard Englefield law firm and worked there till 1995.
In the same years, she qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court in the UK.
She began working at Daimler-Benz Aerospace/EADS (now known as Airbus) in Germany in January 1997. In 2000, she relocated to Munich and Brussels to serve as a representative for Airbus’ interests in the European satellite navigation program called Galileo. She stepped down from her position at Airbus as a Business Development Manager in May 2004.
Shortly after, in September 2004, she joined the EMEA Satellite Operators Association (ESOA), which was later renamed the Global Satellite Operators’ Association (GSOA) in 2021.

She served as the Secretary General of GSOA until her retirement in January 2023. During her time at GSOA, Aarti played a crucial role in expanding the association from a European entity to one that represents the interests of 22 global and regional satellite operators.
In September 2004, she established Orbitz Consulting in Brussels and assumed the role of its President. Orbitz Consulting specializes in providing consulting services to clients involved in the space and satellite industry.
She was named one of the Faces of Satellite of 2014 by the Society of Satellite Professionals International.
In 2015, she played a crucial role in the creation of the Crisis Connectivity Charter, which emphasised on utilizing satellite technology for emergency telecommunications. The charter was specifically designed in collaboration with the World Food Programme’s Emergency Telecommunications Cluster to address critical communication needs during crises and emergencies.

In April 2023, she assumed the position of Executive Vice President Sustainability, Policy & Impact at NorthStar Earth & Space in Brussels.
Aarti has worked in various capacities related to the space sector in longtime career. She has served as a member of the WEF Global 5G Coalition Network, WEF Essential Digital Infrastructure & Services Network, and WEF’s Global Future Council on Space. She has also contributed as a member of the Advisory Group of the Space Sustainability Rating, managed by eSpace at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Space Center. Apart from that, she has been on the Advisory Board of the Satellite Industry Association of India.
She worked as a Senior Space Policy Advisor to Forum Europe and as an Expert Advisor on Space Traffic Management for European Union studies from 2021 to 2023.
On June 26, 2023, AntĂłnio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed Aarti Holla-Maini as the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), situated in Vienna. UNOOSA is a part of the U.N. Secretariat dedicated to fostering global collaboration for the peaceful use and exploration of outer space, as well as the application of space science and technology to support sustainable economic and social development.
