Aarit Kapil hails from New Delhi.
Aarit studies in the 5th grade and is already considered one of the most promising young chess players in India.
He was introduced to chess by his sister when he was four years old. Within a week, he started defeating casual players.
In 2022, he won the Under-8 Delhi State Chess Championship and represented Delhi at the national level.

Before moving to the international level, Aarit has won various state and national chess competitions at different levels.
In 2023, Aarit participated in the Asian chess youth championship, Alain, UAE and secured 1st runner-up position.

On 9 December 2024, he defeated a 66-year-old grandmaster, Raset Ziatdinov, in a classical game at the KIIT International Open in Bhubaneswar, over a 63-move endgame, and became the youngest Indian ever to defeat a Grandmaster in a classical chess match and the third youngest player in the world to do so.
After a stunning 63-move victory against Ziatdinov, Aarit Kapil has maintained an ELO rating of 1825, making him one of the highest-rated chess players in his group and a rising force in the world of junior chess.
In late December 2024, he led the open category at the 37th National Underâ9 Championship in Pune, where he scored 7.5 points after defeating top competitor Nidhish Shyamal.

In early 2025, Aarit Kapil was awarded the title of Candidate Master (CM) by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), despite not reaching an ELO rating of 2200. FIDE made an exception due to his remarkable performance, which included a historic victory against Grandmaster Raset Ziatdinov in December of the previous year.

On June 25, 2025, Aarit took part in an online chess tournament called âEarly Titled Tuesday,â hosted on Chess.com.
While playing in Georgia, where he was taking part in the World U-10 Championship, Aarit found himself up against Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen , the worldâs top-ranked chess player and former World Champion.
During the game, until the 46th move, Aarit had a winning position against Carlsen. But with his time running low, Aarit allowed Carlsen to salvage a draw on the 49th move, which was still commendable for his age, and his opponent is world champion Magnus Carlsen.
Aarit practices chess for five to six hours every day.
He is being trained by International Master Vishal Sareen, who called him the âSachin Tendulkar of Chessâ.
