Some Lesser Known Facts About A Rajarajan
A Rajarajan is an Indian scientist, who is the director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota and chief of the Launch Authorisation Board (LAB). He is one of those 5 key ISRO scientists, who played a major role in making the Chandrayaan-3 mission of India successful in 2023.
He is recognized as a leading expert in the field of composites. He has authored numerous national and international papers on composite materials.
When he began to work as a scientist at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), he became a part of VSSC’s Fiber Reinforced Plastic division. He has contributed to the development of significant composite products.
In 2017, following the setback of the PSLV C39 mission due to issues with the payload fairing separation system, he was appointed as the deputy director of the Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity (PRSO). As the deputy director, he led a team that properly reviewed the situation to identify and address problems. His leadership resulted in the optimization of ordnance system production procedures, enhancing overall reliability. He also focused on refining analytical techniques for various systems, improving the development of a more dependable pyro separation system configuration for payload fairing, and successfully validating in subsequent launches.
During his tenure as deputy director of the composites entity, he was involved in the development of a wide array of composite products, such as spanning solar panel substrates, diverse antenna types, an impressive 5-meter diameter and 10.7-meter high Ogive payload fairing, and intertank structures.
His works also involve technologies for crafting composites for satellite and launch vehicle sub-systems. Throughout his career, he assumed leadership responsibilities for multiple VSSC entities, including the Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity (PRSO), Aero Space Ordnance Entity (ASOE), Composites Entity (CMSE), and Structures Entity (STR).
In July 2019, he was promoted to the position of director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC).
As the director of SDSC, he is responsible for solid motor production and advancing launch complex infrastructure to meet ISRO’s increasing launch demands. This encompasses a diverse array of missions, spanning from the Human Space Programme (Gaganyaan) to the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).
Under his guidance, remarkable progress has been achieved in configuring and establishing state-of-the-art facilities for solid motor production and launch vehicle integration. This has streamlined the entire process of producing, integrating, and launching ISRO’s Satellite Launch Vehicles in a considerably short span of time.
He actively engages with various industries to collaborate as partners with ISRO in the development of crucial technologies.
His contributions extend to several significant Indian planetary missions of ISRO, including Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2, where his involvement helped confirm the presence of water molecules on the moon.
