Some Lesser Known Facts About A N Pramod
Vice Admiral A N Pramod holds the second-highest rank in the Indian Navy. The Vice Admiral rank is above the two-star rankĀ ofĀ Rear AdmiralĀ and below theĀ four-star rankĀ ofĀ Admiral, which is held by theĀ Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). The equivalent rank in theĀ Indian ArmyĀ isĀ lieutenant general,Ā and in theĀ Indian Air ForceĀ isĀ air marshal.
After completing the 38th Integrated Cadet Course at the Indian Navy Academy, Goa, he was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 1 July 1990.
During that time, he was specialised in Communication and Electronic Warfare.
In 1990, he was trained as a naval aviatorĀ and qualified as a Naval Air Operations Officer.
In the same year, heĀ underwent the Sea King observer course, where he qualified as a āCat Aā observer.
He was awarded theĀ Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval CommandĀ Rolling Trophy for standing first in flying training/ground subjects and the Uttar Pradesh trophy for being first in the Overall Order of Merit.
During his early years of service, he stood second in the Long Communication course (the course focuses on communication, electronic communication and Information Technology).
He also served as Gunnery Officer II on Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kirpan (P44) and as Signal and Communications Officer on Indian Naval Ship Sujata (P56).
In 1995, heĀ served as Joint Director of Naval Air Staff and as the Joint Director of Aircraft Acquisition at naval headquarters.
In the early 2000s, A N Pramod commanded IndianĀ Naval Ship Abhay (P33), an anti-submarine warfare corvette.
In 2004, Pramod commanded Indian Naval Ship Shardul, Mumbai.
From 2006 to 2009, he was a member of the Tactical Audit Group (TAG) (a body that reviews and assesses the tactical aspects of naval operations and strategies).
A N Pramod served as the executive officerĀ of the lead ship ofĀ her classĀ ofĀ guided missile destroyers,Ā INSĀ RajputĀ (D51). He then commanded theĀ Shivalik-classĀ stealthĀ multi-roleĀ frigateĀ INSĀ SatpuraĀ (F48).
In 2016, during theĀ International Fleet Review, he was commanding Indian Naval Ship (INS) Satpura (F-48), a Shivalik-class stealth multi-role frigate ship.
When he was appointed as Captain in the Indian Navy, he attended the Naval Higher Command Course at theĀ Naval War College, Goa.
A N Pramod also served as the Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington Cantonment, Tamil Nadu.
From 2016 to 2019, he was a member of the Indian Naval Strategic & Operational Council (INSOC) (a forum for developing and refining naval strategic and operational policies).
In 2018, Pramod served as Joint Director of Naval Air Staff and Joint Director of Aircraft Acquisition at Naval Headquarters (NHQ), New Delhi. He had also served as the Principal Director of Aircraft Acquisition at NHQ.
He also served as the Fleet Operations Officer of theĀ Western Fleet, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
In 2020, Pramod commanded the Indian Naval Air Station INS Utkrosh at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
On 11 January 2021, A N Pramod was promoted to flag rank. He was appointed Deputy Commandant and Chief InstructorĀ of theĀ Indian Naval Academy, Goa.
In April 2022, he was appointed Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (ACNS) (Air) and moved to the Naval headquarters, New Delhi.
In November 2022, he was appointed as the Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area (FOMA).
In November 2023, he concluded his tenure as FOMA, and on 15th January 2024, was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed as the Director General of Naval Operations.
In May 2025, he led the Indian Navyās response during Operation Sindoor and oversaw the rapid deployment of naval assets in the Arabian Sea.
On May 11th 2025, A N Pramad, along with Air Marshal A K Bharti, the Director General of Military Operations, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, held a joint press conference in New Delhi. They addressed the strikes that were launched in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.
